  1. Peter Bogdanovich: On the other side of the camera

Peter Bogdanovich never stopped being an actor, hard as he tried. Even after his career became focused on directing such acclaimed films as "The Last Picture Show" and "Paper Moon," Bogdanovich would occasionally still find himself drawn to the other side of the camera, most recently on "The Sopranos" and a new film called "Pasadena."

  3. On the Town: 'Christmas' is an interactive hit with children; Walter Hoving Home awarded grant

Sunday marks the last two performances of the Pasadena Playhouse hit “A Snow White Christmas.” The English “panto” (holiday play), a comic take on the classic fairy tale, provided a change from the traditional “Nutcracker” or “Christmas Carol.” The two-run made up of 31 performances has attracted thousands of children, accompanied by more than willing parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Many were looking forward to the queen’s Magic Mirror with its video-projected Neil Patrick Harris. Another favorite was the in-person Charlene Tilton as the Wicked Queen. Hands down, the kids couldn’t wait for the miniature pony named Blitzen.

  5. Film review: Nancy Savoca returns to form with 'Union Square'

Throughout the ‘90s, Nancy Savoca was one of those indie filmmakers whose work consistently garnered festival awards and positive reviews without crossing over to a broader audience. After three edgy features — “True Love” (1989), “Dogfight” (1991) and “Household Saints” (1993) — whose virtues did not lend themselves to high-concept marketing, she started moving into television. In 1999, she made the Rosie Perez film “The 24 Hour Woman” with a higher budget — still in the low seven digits — and glossier production values. Despite several fine performances, it did little business. Now she's back with “Union Square,” in all ways a welcome return to the grit and edginess of her early work.
