  1. Dining review: Forget your arteries and lap it up at Slater's 50/50

There's a new burger and sports TV joint in Pasadena. We're calling it the Testosterone province of Cholesterolistan. The owners call it Slater's 50/50. The 50/50 stands for the makeup of their burger patties — 50% ground beef, 50% ground bacon. There's bacon in the ketchup, in the salt and in the brownies, and, if you ask for it, in the milkshakes.

  3. On the Town: Chef puts gourmet meals into practice, Gingerbread Boutique in Arcadia

Pasadena residents in the know are flocking to Glendale for Recess. But it's not just a break they want. Pasadenans want gourmet food at non-gourmet prices. For three Thursday evenings Recess Executive Chef-Owner Sevan Abdessian is offering just that. The chef was the first Los Angeles resident to win a spot on the Food Network's popular New York-based “Chopped” show. Abdessian is “practicing” on residents who come locally and from other parts of the San Gabriel Valley. Thursday night customers will spend $30 for a delicious practice dinner including appetizer, entrée and dessert. So far Chef Abdessian has had plenty of practice. Four Thursday dinners have already taken place.

  5. Pasadena's 18-foot fork gets visit from six-ton Idaho 'potato'

Pasadena’s 18-foot fork finally has food to match its massive scale.
Pasadena’s 18-foot fork finally has food to match its massive scale. Drivers heading toward the median that splits Saint John and Pasadena avenues have likely gotten used to the giant wooden utensil stuck in the road. But Tuesday afternoon, they...

  7. Dining review: Student-run Technique gets high marks

At the conclusion of your meal at Technique, the teaching restaurant affiliated with Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, you're handed an evaluation form. It asks for opinions on quality of food, speed of service, and the like. While I couldn't give the highest marks on every detail, I did mark a perfect score in the “overall experience” column. Why? Because there's a gratifying element that exists in few places — the novelty of a student-run operation.

  9. Dining review: A delicious serving of Irish authenticity

At Griffins of Kinsale, the 115-year-old church pews creaked beneath us and the music of tin whistles rose above the din of conversation and laughter. It’s just what you’d expect to hear at a pub in Ireland. But Griffins of Kinsale is the new traditional Irish pub on Mission Street in South Pasadena.

  11. Dining review: Big Daddy's offers better taste than its slogan

The slogan that Big Daddy's Fire Grill plasters on its menu doesn't offer much hope. “We put excitement between your buns,” the words blare over a photograph of a silver-eyeshadowed woman getting ready to bite into a massive burger. The man in the photo next to her reveals an expression somewhere between salacious and silly. Look man, I don't want you anywhere near my buns, but I'm willing to try your sandwiches.

  13. Dining review: Ukrainian cuisine serves a geography lesson

There are cuisines that most Americans don't know enough about to even have misconceptions. Consider Ukraine, which shares a border, religion and alphabet with Russia. People who know only those facts might assume that the culture and cuisine are the same. In fact, this cuisine has inspiration from the Turks, Central Asians, Lithuanians, Poles, Greeks and Germans, who all conquered portions of the country and were vanquished in turn.

  15. Federal audit finds city schools misspent stimulus, Title I funds

The Maryland State Department of Education may have to pay back up to $540,000 in federal money intended to help the state's poorest schools after a scathing audit found that Baltimore City was one of two school districts that misspent the funds, using the money for dinner cruises, makeovers and meals.

  23. Delicious Delaware is tasty beach retreat

Many summer resorts boast spectacular beaches and a vast array of fabulous accommodations. So what distinguishes one beach town from another? Along coastal Delaware, it's the indigenous flavors that set it apart from its sand-strewn neighbors to the north and south.
