1. Dining Out: Two pieces of bread put together with flair

Pity the late John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, whose snack during a card game gave name to the English culinary craze that followed. No, he didn't invent putting a filling between two pieces of bread. That had been done since ancient times. But you have to wonder whether any time someone slathers two slices of Wonder Bread with mayo and places in them a slice of American “cheese” and baloney and calls it by that name, if Lord Sandwich turns ever so slightly in his grave.

  5. Dining review: Big Daddy's offers better taste than its slogan

The slogan that Big Daddy's Fire Grill plasters on its menu doesn't offer much hope. “We put excitement between your buns,” the words blare over a photograph of a silver-eyeshadowed woman getting ready to bite into a massive burger. The man in the photo next to her reveals an expression somewhere between salacious and silly. Look man, I don't want you anywhere near my buns, but I'm willing to try your sandwiches.

  7. Dining review: Ukrainian cuisine serves a geography lesson

There are cuisines that most Americans don't know enough about to even have misconceptions. Consider Ukraine, which shares a border, religion and alphabet with Russia. People who know only those facts might assume that the culture and cuisine are the same. In fact, this cuisine has inspiration from the Turks, Central Asians, Lithuanians, Poles, Greeks and Germans, who all conquered portions of the country and were vanquished in turn.

  9. Jonathan Gold | L.A. restaurant review: Trois Mec is a coveted ticket to cutting edge

Protip: You can tell a lot about a dude from the way he eats buckwheat "popcorn," the crunchy fried grain that tends to show up before the meal at Trois Mec, the new restaurant from Ludovic Lefebvre. The more primitive members of the species worm their fingers into the tiny cup like apes hunting for grubs in a rotten log, scooping out a grain or two and licking them off of their salty fingertips. More advanced specimens pick up the vessel and tap out a few at a time to chew in contemplation. The most impulsive pour them all into their palms and shotgun them in a buttery, vinegary, ultra-crunchy mouthful, intense enough to overpower the dribble of delicately fig-scented Lillet that has been set down as an aperitif.

  13. Restaurant Recipe: Salsa from Coronado's Costa Azul

Dear SOS: On vacation, my husband and I ate at an amazing restaurant in Coronado, Calif., called Costa Azul. They have the best smoked salsa we've ever had. Unfortunately, we live 21/2 hours away. I asked the waiter for the recipe, but he said they don't give it out. I would love to surprise my amazing husband on our anniversary with it. Could you please get the recipe?
