1. Dining review: Forget your arteries and lap it up at Slater's 50/50

There's a new burger and sports TV joint in Pasadena. We're calling it the Testosterone province of Cholesterolistan. The owners call it Slater's 50/50. The 50/50 stands for the makeup of their burger patties — 50% ground beef, 50% ground bacon. There's bacon in the ketchup, in the salt and in the brownies, and, if you ask for it, in the milkshakes.

  3. Dining review: Take a savory bite out of Umami Burger

Umami Burger has made its way to Pasadena. The modernist burger joint was bound to arrive sooner or later. Lucky for us, it was sooner.

  5. In Theory: A pastor fumbles a difficult situation

  7. Dining review: Big Daddy's offers better taste than its slogan

The slogan that Big Daddy's Fire Grill plasters on its menu doesn't offer much hope. “We put excitement between your buns,” the words blare over a photograph of a silver-eyeshadowed woman getting ready to bite into a massive burger. The man in the photo next to her reveals an expression somewhere between salacious and silly. Look man, I don't want you anywhere near my buns, but I'm willing to try your sandwiches.

  9. Dining review: Ukrainian cuisine serves a geography lesson

There are cuisines that most Americans don't know enough about to even have misconceptions. Consider Ukraine, which shares a border, religion and alphabet with Russia. People who know only those facts might assume that the culture and cuisine are the same. In fact, this cuisine has inspiration from the Turks, Central Asians, Lithuanians, Poles, Greeks and Germans, who all conquered portions of the country and were vanquished in turn.

  11. Chefs using their noodles

Eggs, cheese, bacon and black pepper. Those are the components that go into pasta carbonara, a classic Italian dish that's a real crowd pleaser. But what's pleasing to the public isn't always fulfilling for creatively inclined chefs. And so they come up...

  15. Culinary Giant: Ada Boni

Ada Boni's cookbook "Il Talismano della Felicita" is considered to be the Italian "Joy of Cooking." It's easy to see why: Published in 1928, the book (which translates as "the talisman of happiness" in English) quickly became a must-have for generations of Italian women and went through multiple editions and revisions. It arrived in the United States in 1950 as "The Talisman Italian Cookbook" and was among the few authentic Italian cookbooks in English at the time. The book influenced and inspired home cooks and food professionals alike.

  17. The Gold Standard: It's time for Emmy to surprise us

Backstage at the Emmys last year, reporters were squirming — and not just because of the ill-fitting rental tuxes and too-tight gowns. As "Modern Family" rolled to its third straight Emmy win for comedy series (after earlier pulling in prizes for...

  19. Dining Review: Peacha's makes for a rockin' hole in the wall

Whiplash is one of the hazards of my job. I take unfamiliar streets when I drive around town with the express purpose of discovering new restaurants. Peacha's, a tiny place on south Victory near Alameda in Burbank, made me do a hard double-take, almost hitting the car in front of me. Luckily, I didn't. Instead, I got to enjoy the best chimichanga of my life.

  21. A newbie's guide to Chicago Craft Beer Week

How much does Chicago love its beer? Our craft beer week is 11 days long, if that's any indication. The fourth annual Chicago Craft Beer Week (May 16-26) is busier than past years, with 21 new breweries joining the lineup of tastings, tap takeovers and $4 pint nights. The schedule can seem a bit intimidating to newcomers, so we've mapped out the ultimate calendar for those looking to dip their toes into Chicago's thriving beer world. If you're planning to attend multiple events, download the free Chicago Craft Beer Week app (chibeerweek.com), which has a complete listing of the more than 400 events, plus neighborhood guides and a function that tracks your attendance, earns you points and could win you some swag at the end of the week. My advice to first-timers? Check out a bar you've never been to, drink plenty of water and clear your week of morning meetings. kbernot@tribune.com | @redeyeeatdrink

  23. Crazy for glazing

So many home cooks are obsessed with making dishes just like the professionals do. They buy hand-forged Japanese chefs knives, seek out $50 bottles of olive oil and spend hours preparing elaborately composed dishes from "The French Laundry Cookbook" or "Eleven Madison Park."
