1. Dining review: Forget your arteries and lap it up at Slater's 50/50

There's a new burger and sports TV joint in Pasadena. We're calling it the Testosterone province of Cholesterolistan. The owners call it Slater's 50/50. The 50/50 stands for the makeup of their burger patties — 50% ground beef, 50% ground bacon. There's bacon in the ketchup, in the salt and in the brownies, and, if you ask for it, in the milkshakes.

  3. On the Town: Chef puts gourmet meals into practice, Gingerbread Boutique in Arcadia

Pasadena residents in the know are flocking to Glendale for Recess. But it's not just a break they want. Pasadenans want gourmet food at non-gourmet prices. For three Thursday evenings Recess Executive Chef-Owner Sevan Abdessian is offering just that. The chef was the first Los Angeles resident to win a spot on the Food Network's popular New York-based “Chopped” show. Abdessian is “practicing” on residents who come locally and from other parts of the San Gabriel Valley. Thursday night customers will spend $30 for a delicious practice dinner including appetizer, entrée and dessert. So far Chef Abdessian has had plenty of practice. Four Thursday dinners have already taken place.

  7. Sofia Solomon, cheese advocate

Sofia Solomon didn't invent cheese, of course, but she is credited with helping to introduce many Chicagoans to the delights of artisan cheeses, notably those made by this region's cheesemakers.

  9. O'Leary's serves contemporary seafood in a colorful waterfront cottage

The best thing about O'Leary's Seafood Restaurant is how tricky it is to describe. Not so many years back, I'd have called O'Leary's eclectic, which became a byword for both a type of menu and the kind of place that served it. Offering a relaxed version...

  11. Restaurant review: Mariams adds to Valley's culinary diversity

Mariams Restaurant in Allentown expands the Lehigh Valley’s culinary diversity. The ethnic eatery, which opened in February, serves up exotic-sounding Ethiopian fare such as “doro wot” (chicken stew) that might just be described as African comfort food.

Alan Greeley's Golden Truffle has been around for more than 30 years, and there is a reason why this neighborhood bistro has had such longevity.

  21. George's makes itself a good neighbor for Mount Vernon

George's, the restaurant at the Wyndham Peabody Court Hotel in Mount Vernon, is a sleeper. It hasn't completely shrugged off its hotel-amenity feeling, but it's getting there. George's is making an effort to reach out. There's a good sampling on the...

  23. The Gossiping Gourmet: Very Peri-Peri at Mozambique

Summer is coming to Laguna Beach in fits and starts, tempting us with a beautiful sunny day followed by a gray cloudy one. On one of the lovely warm evenings, my husband and I decided to enjoy the upstairs terrace at Mozambique called the Shebeen.
