  3. Film review: Woody Allen's 'Rome' is good but can't top 'Paris'

In “To Rome with Love,” his latest feature — roughly No. 42, depending on how you count — the prolific Woody Allen continues his long European vacation. In 2005, he went to London to make “Match Point” and received his best reviews in a decade. (Check out a list of his previous 10 films, and you'll see what I mean.) In 2008, his Spanish outing, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” was even better received; and last year's “Midnight in Paris” still better than that, becoming his highest-grossing film ever and earning him his first Oscar since “Hannah and Her Sisters” in 1986.

  5. 'Cleopatra,' a spectacle on- and off-screen

There was the spectacle, the runaway budget, the fights with the studio. But almost everyone thinks about the 1963 movie "Cleopatra" for one thing: Liz and Dick. Martin Landau remembers the day when he realized "Cleopatra" stars Elizabeth Taylor and...

  7. World watch

Brazil: Whether it's a cultural experience or slum tourism, many tourists now add a trip to Rio de Janeiro's infamous favelas, or shantytowns, to their itineraries. Before 2010, the low-income hilltop neighborhoods were dangerous places controlled by drug gangs. With the World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games on the horizon, the government stepped in to make the neighborhoods safer for residents and tourists. Now, law and order prevail, and foreign visitors are heading into the hills to see how one-third of the city's population lives. A popular cable car system ferries nearly 12,000 people daily over the Alemao, a complex of 13 favelas, offering sky-high views of Rio's most famous landmarks and glimpses of everyday life below.

  15. Culinary Giant: Ada Boni

Ada Boni's cookbook "Il Talismano della Felicita" is considered to be the Italian "Joy of Cooking." It's easy to see why: Published in 1928, the book (which translates as "the talisman of happiness" in English) quickly became a must-have for generations of Italian women and went through multiple editions and revisions. It arrived in the United States in 1950 as "The Talisman Italian Cookbook" and was among the few authentic Italian cookbooks in English at the time. The book influenced and inspired home cooks and food professionals alike.

  19. After death, a church leader's sordid side revealed

By the time the letter arrived, the grass on Benjamin Hawkes' grave had grown thick. Historians had chronicled how he transformed the Los Angeles archdiocese into a billion-dollar institution.
