  1. Film review: Woody Allen's 'Rome' is good but can't top 'Paris'

In “To Rome with Love,” his latest feature — roughly No. 42, depending on how you count — the prolific Woody Allen continues his long European vacation. In 2005, he went to London to make “Match Point” and received his best reviews in a decade. (Check out a list of his previous 10 films, and you'll see what I mean.) In 2008, his Spanish outing, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” was even better received; and last year's “Midnight in Paris” still better than that, becoming his highest-grossing film ever and earning him his first Oscar since “Hannah and Her Sisters” in 1986.

  3. Film review: Nancy Savoca returns to form with 'Union Square'

Throughout the ‘90s, Nancy Savoca was one of those indie filmmakers whose work consistently garnered festival awards and positive reviews without crossing over to a broader audience. After three edgy features — “True Love” (1989), “Dogfight” (1991) and “Household Saints” (1993) — whose virtues did not lend themselves to high-concept marketing, she started moving into television. In 1999, she made the Rosie Perez film “The 24 Hour Woman” with a higher budget — still in the low seven digits — and glossier production values. Despite several fine performances, it did little business. Now she's back with “Union Square,” in all ways a welcome return to the grit and edginess of her early work.

  5. Film review: 'Awakening' to a burst of nonsense

There's probably some great psychology/sociology book out there that analyzes why we like ghost stories, why they appear in nearly every culture, and why they're generally the first horror concept each culture develops. Presumably it has something to do with wish fulfillment dreams polluted by the fear of death, and universal taboos that make us recoil from decaying bodies. In any case, ghosts have been a source of terror in literature at least as far back as “Macbeth,” and for most of the history of cinema.

  7. Levitt Pavilion: Breaking camp, becoming All Stars

It's hard to think of a more harrowing inspiration for a band than that of Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars. The West African group met in a Guinean refugee camp after fleeing the brutal, decade-long civil war in their native Sierra Leone. But rather than lose hope, the members — who lost family, friends and limbs in the conflict — found a way to uplift their people through music.

  9. Film review: Latest 'Spider-Man' is diverting, but not amazing

If it seems like only a few years since we thrilled to director Sam Raimi's “Spider-Man” trilogy, well ... that's because it was. Raimi's films were released in 2002, 2004, and 2007. After a mere five years, Sony is starting all over again. The question is: Was it worth it?

Movie memorabilia from the 1960s has enjoyed a renewed interest on the market lately. Specifically, screen legends and big budget movies spell value with collectibles on the auction block.
