  1. In Theory: An Italian priest's divisive words

An Italian Catholic priest is under fire for a Christmas message he made that apparently blames women for domestic violence. Perio Corsi's text, titled “Women and femicide — healthy self-criticism. How often do they provoke?” contains the lines, “How often do we see girls and mature women going around scantily dressed and in provocative clothes? They provoke the worst instincts, which end in violence or sexual abuse. They should search their consciences and ask: Did we bring this on ourselves?”

  3. On the Town: Elks huddle to celebrate 100

The Glendale Elks Lodge #1289 just celebrated the 100th anniversary of their founding and Pasadena has a lot to do with it. When Glendale's original lodge was destroyed by fire set by an arsonist in 1986, members of Pasadena Elks Lodge #672 stepped in to help. They offered the use of their Pasadena facilities by Glendale Elks for four years. The Metropolitan and San Gabriel districts provided support from sister lodges. But Pasadena Lodge's hospitality allowed the membership of Glendale to continue to perform their commitments to the community.

  11. On the Town: Home tour is replete with design ideas

Dec. 1 and 2 marked the 45th annual Holiday Look In Home Tour of four lavishly decorated homes and one boutique. The five venues covered San Marino and South Pasadena. At $35 a ticket, the tour that draws hundreds of visitors is a major fundraiser for the 100-member Women's Committee of the Pasadena Symphony Assn. The organization's President Gloria Koeppel gently supervised homeowners, florists, vendors, patrons, friends and dozens of volunteers to put on the traditional home tour of all home tours.

  13. On the Town: 'Christmas' is an interactive hit with children; Walter Hoving Home awarded grant

Sunday marks the last two performances of the Pasadena Playhouse hit “A Snow White Christmas.” The English “panto” (holiday play), a comic take on the classic fairy tale, provided a change from the traditional “Nutcracker” or “Christmas Carol.” The two-run made up of 31 performances has attracted thousands of children, accompanied by more than willing parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Many were looking forward to the queen’s Magic Mirror with its video-projected Neil Patrick Harris. Another favorite was the in-person Charlene Tilton as the Wicked Queen. Hands down, the kids couldn’t wait for the miniature pony named Blitzen.

  21. On the Town: Chef puts gourmet meals into practice, Gingerbread Boutique in Arcadia

Pasadena residents in the know are flocking to Glendale for Recess. But it's not just a break they want. Pasadenans want gourmet food at non-gourmet prices. For three Thursday evenings Recess Executive Chef-Owner Sevan Abdessian is offering just that. The chef was the first Los Angeles resident to win a spot on the Food Network's popular New York-based “Chopped” show. Abdessian is “practicing” on residents who come locally and from other parts of the San Gabriel Valley. Thursday night customers will spend $30 for a delicious practice dinner including appetizer, entrée and dessert. So far Chef Abdessian has had plenty of practice. Four Thursday dinners have already taken place.
