Mayfield 3, Sultana 0: It was another solid evening from the Cubs’ duo of senior outside hitters Josie Luck and Maggie Dunn as the pair led Prep League runner-up Mayfield to a 25-18, 25-14, 25-23 first-round home victory in the CIF Southern Section Division II-A playoffs on Tuesday evening.
Luck paced the Cubs (21-5) with 11 kills and 11 digs, while Dunn added eight kills and 17 digs.
"This was a solid match that we needed, especially since we’ve had a week and a half off," Mayfield first-year Coach Jon Basilio said. "We had a balanced environment today and I really think that’s because of the tough competition we face in the Prep League, day in and day out."
Mayfield senior setter Madeline Watkins finished with 16 assists and Bela Garcia added seven aces, while 10 players contributed at least one kill for the Cubs.
Up next for ninth-ranked Mayfield is a match with either Desert Valley League champion Xavier Prep (16-0) or Empire League third-place Garden Grove Pacifica on Thursday.
Oxnard 3, Westridge 0: The visiting Tigers ran into a superior foe in third-seeded host Oxnard, which ended Westridge’s season after a 25-13, 25-17, 25-22 win in Tuesday’s first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II-A playoffs Tuesday evening.
"The playoffs were a great experience, especially yesterday when we had the girls win in front of their home crowd," Tigers Coach Otto Lacayo said. "There have been girls on this team like senior Cate Hurley that have been waiting for the achievement of making it to
the playoffs and I’m proud we made it."
Tigers junior middle blocker Carmen Costa again led her team with 13 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Natalie Martinez added four kills, junior middle blocker Meagan MacPhee chipped in six blocks, freshman defensive specialist Michelle Aguirre tallied 14 digs and Hurley contributed 22 assists.
Westridge (13-12), which finished fifth in the Prep League, was competitive in the second game, at one point tying the game at 16, while the Tigers faltered late in the third and deciding game.
