Last season, Pasadena High’s boys’ basketball team took care of business when it won the CIF Southern Section Division 3-AAA championship most predicted it would win.
But in 2013, the road to a championship appears far more arduous now that the Bulldogs have been moved up to Division 1-AA. They received their first-round playoff task along with 11 other Pasadena-area boys’ squads on Sunday.
The Pacific League-champion Bulldogs, granted the No. 10 seed, will host Downey, the San Gabriel Valley League’s No. 2 team, in Friday’s first round.
South Pasadena, San Marino, Muir, Maranatha, La Salle, Marshall Fundamental, Renaissance Academy, Pasadena Poly, Pasadena Armenian General Benevolent Union, St. Monica Academy and Southwestern Academy are all along for the postseason roller-coaster ride.
South Pas, after notching a Rio Hondo League at-large berth, travels to face No. 12 Lompoc Cabrillo in Division 3-A’s first round on Wednesday.
Division 4-AA features a quartet of locals. San Marino, after a third-place Rio Hondo League finish, travels to face No. 11 Oaks Christian, while No. 13 Muir, after a Pacific League third-place finish, will host Heritage Christian, the Olympic League’s third-place squad. After taking second in the Olympic League, Maranatha will host Costa Mesa, an Orange Coast League at-large team, while Del Rey League third-place finisher La Salle travels to face Santa Fe League No. 3 St. Genevieve. All 4-AA openers are on Wednesday.
Renaissance Academy, the highest seed among locals at No. 6 in Division 4-A, took second in the Harbor League and will host Crean Lutheran, an Academy League at-large, on Wednesday in the first round. Also in the division, Marshall, after a third-place finish in the Delphic League, will face Mountain Valley third-place squad Riverside Notre Dame. The winner will play No. 1 Pacific Hills in Friday’s second round.
In Division 5-AA, No. 12 Pasadena Poly, after a third-place mark in the Prep League, will travel to play the Academy of Excellence, the No. 2 Agape League team, in Wednesday’s first round.
No. 14 AGBU, the Westside League No. 3, travels to play at Cate, the Condor League’s second-place squad, in Division 5-A’s first round on Wednesday.
Finally in Division 6, International League No. 3 St. Monica will host No. 13 Lake Arrowhead Christian, while International League No. 4 Southwestern travels to face second-seeded Trinity Classical.
