Photo Gallery: Astrophotography workshop at Mt. Wilson Observatory
From the Mt. Wilson Observatory, set on a ridge at an altitude of 5,715 feet in the San Gabriel Mountains, it's hard to see a colorful shell of ionized gas and dust with the naked eye. That's where the 60-inch Hale telescope, built in 1908, takes over.

Astronomy buffs listen to Mt. Wilson Observatory Superintendent David Jurasevich talk about the 60-inch telescope at right during an astrophotography workshop at the historic facilities on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012. The class, first of its type and sponsored by Canon USA and Samy's Camera, brought 25 astrophotography enthusiasts to the observatory high above the city of Pasadena for a night of star photography. The students were able to take some photos through the 60-inch telescope.
